Introducing the Whispering Wheat Wall Hanging

Transform your space with this textured, boho-chic wall hanging, featuring the mesmerizing Drunken Granny Stitch in warm, earthy tones. This pattern creates a stunning, tactile piece that brings a touch of handcrafted elegance to any room. Whether you're a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking for a rewarding project, this wall hanging is the perfect way to add a cozy, handcrafted vibe to your home. The Drunken Granny Stitch creates a soft, wavy surface that mimics the gentle sway of wheat in the breeze, making it a beautiful alternative to macrame.

Materials Needed

Before you begin, gather the following materials. This pattern uses super bulky weight yarn and a large hook, so it works up quickly!

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (or any super bulky weight yarn) in 3 colors:
    • Color A - Wheat (approx 120 yds)
    • Color B - Oatmeal (approx 80 yds)
    • Color C - Charcoal (approx 60 yds)
  • Hook: Size N/P (10 mm) crochet hook
  • Other: Scissors, tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Gauge: 4 Drunken Granny clusters = 4 inches across, 4 rows = 4 inches tall (in pattern). Gauge is not critical for this project, but it will affect the final size.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Pattern Notes: The Drunken Granny Stitch is a variation of the classic granny cluster, worked in a staggered, wavy pattern. The wall hanging is worked from the top down. The "ch-1 space" refers to the space created by the chain 1 between the two double crochets in each cluster.

Foundation Row

With Color A, chain 31 loosely. This will be the top edge of your wall hanging.

Row 1 (Right Side)

Double crochet (dc) in the 4th chain from the hook. This counts as your first double crochet. Now, work the Drunken Granny cluster: *Skip the next 2 chains, then in the next chain work (dc, chain 1, dc)*. Repeat from * across the row until you have 3 chains remaining. Skip the next 2 chains, then work 1 dc in the very last chain. Turn your work. You should have 10 Drunken Granny clusters.

Row 2

Chain 3 (this counts as your first dc). Now, work the Drunken Granny cluster into the next ch-1 space: *Skip the next ch-1 space (the one from the previous row), then in the next ch-1 space work (dc, chain 1, dc)*. Repeat from * across the row until you reach the last ch-1 space. Skip that last ch-1 space, then work 1 dc into the top of the turning chain from the previous row. Turn.

Row 3

Repeat Row 2 exactly. At the end of Row 3, fasten off Color A and join Color B by pulling a loop through the last stitch.

Row 4

With Color B, repeat Row 2. Work the clusters into the ch-1 spaces as before.

Row 5

Repeat Row 2 with Color B. At the end of Row 5, fasten off Color B and join Color C.

Row 6

With Color C, repeat Row 2.

Row 7

Repeat Row 2 with Color C. At the end of Row 7, fasten off Color C and join Color A.

Row 8

With Color A, repeat Row 2.

Row 9

Repeat Row 2 with Color A. At the end of Row 9, fasten off Color A and join Color B.

Row 10

With Color B, repeat Row 2.

Row 11

Repeat Row 2 with Color B. At the end of Row 11, fasten off Color B and join Color C.

Row 12

With Color C, repeat Row 2.

Row 13

Repeat Row 2 with Color C. At the end of Row 13, fasten off Color C and join Color A.

Row 14

With Color A, repeat Row 2.

Row 15

Repeat Row 2 with Color A. At the end of Row 15, fasten off. Weave in all ends securely using your tapestry needle.

Finishing

To create the hanging loops, cut two 24-inch lengths of Color A. For each loop, fold the yarn in half and tie a knot at the ends to create a loop. Thread the folded end through the top left corner of the wall hanging (through the first chain space or stitch), then pull the knotted ends through the loop. Pull tight to secure. Repeat for the top right corner. Trim the bottom fringe to your desired length (optional). Your Whispering Wheat Wall Hanging is now ready to display!
