Crocheted Black Balls

These small, stuffed black balls are perfect toys or decorations and are incredibly simple to make! Follow this detailed beginner-friendly pattern to make them in any size you choose. This pattern can be adjusted based on your preferred yarn and hook size.

Materials

  • Black worsted weight yarn (approximately 50-100 grams depending on the size)
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • 4.0 mm (G) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Gauge

Gauge is not crucial for this project, but for reference, 4 single crochet (sc) stitches in worsted weight yarn creates a width of about 1 inch.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec = decrease (sc2tog, or single crochet two together)
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Instructions

  1. Starting the Ball:
Begin with a magic ring or adjustable loop.
  2. Round 1:
Work 6 sc into the magic ring. Pull the loop tight to close the ring. (6 stitches)
  3. Round 2:
Inc in each st around. (12 stitches)
  4. Round 3:
*1 sc in the next st, inc in the next st*; repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  5. Round 4:
*1 sc in the next 2 sts, inc in the next st*; repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
  6. Round 5:
*1 sc in the next 3 sts, inc in the next st*; repeat from * to * around. (30 stitches)
  7. Rounds 6-10:
Work 1 sc in each st around for 5 rounds (30 stitches).
  8. Stuffing:
Begin adding fiberfill stuffing to the ball. Make sure it's stuffed well but not overly tight.
  9. Decreasing:
*1 sc in the next 3 sts, dec over the next 2 sts*; repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
  10. Continue Decreasing:
*1 sc in the next 2 sts, dec over the next 2 sts*; repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  11. Final Rounds:
*1 sc in the next st, dec over the next 2 sts*; repeat from * to * around. (12 stitches)
  12. Last Round:
Dec over the next 2 sts around until you have 6 stitches remaining.
  13. Finishing:
Cut the yarn leaving a long tail, thread it through the remaining stitches, pull tight to close, and sew in any loose ends with a yarn needle.
