Crochet Earflap Hat with Flower

Materials Needed

  • Worsted weight yarn in red, purple, and yellow.
  • Crochet hook size H/5 mm.
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors.

Gauge

10 single crochet stitches and 12 rows = 4 inches.

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Instructions

Hat Base

  1. With red yarn, create a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: ch 2 (does not count as dc here and throughout), 12 dc in ring; join with sl st to first dc. (12 sts)
  3. Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around; join with sl st. (24 sts)
  4. Round 3: ch 2, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*; repeat from * to * around; join with sl st. (36 sts)
  5. Round 4: ch 2, dc in each st around; join with sl st. (36 sts)
  6. Repeat Round 4 until the hat measures 6 inches from the crown.

Earflaps

  1. Join purple yarn at side of the hat.
  2. Row 1: ch 1, sc in next 8 sts, turn. (8 sc)
  3. Row 2: ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog, turn. (6 sc)
  4. Row 3: ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, turn. (4 sc)
  5. Row 4: ch 1, sc2tog twice, turn. (2 sc)
  6. Row 5: ch 1, sc2tog, turn. Fasten off. (1 sc)
  7. Count 18 stitches from the first earflap and join purple yarn for the second earflap. Repeat steps 2-6 for symmetry.

Edging

With red yarn, sc evenly around the edge of the hat and earflaps to create a neat border. Join with sl st and fasten off.

Flower

  1. With yellow yarn, make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: ch 1, 6 sc in ring; join with sl st. (6 sts)
  3. Change to purple yarn for petals.
  4. Petal: (ch 2, 3 dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in next st) repeat around to create 6 petals. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing

  1. Using the yarn needle, sew the flower onto the side of the hat.
  2. Weave in any remaining yarn ends.
