Cozy Blue Pom-Pom Beanie

This pattern guides you through making a delightful blue beanie with a fashionable pom-pom on top. Soft and warm, this hat is perfect for keeping you cozy during winter. Let’s get started!

Materials

  • 1 skein of bulky weight yarn (approximately 100 yards/90 meters) in a blue or blue multi-color
  • Knitting needles size 10 mm (US 15)
  • Pom-pom maker or cardboard for making a pom-pom
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

10 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Adjust needle size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge.

Abbreviations

  • k: knit
  • p: purl
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • RS: right side
  • WS: wrong side
  • BO: bind off

Instructions

Cast On

Using the long tail cast-on method, cast on 40 stitches onto your knitting needles.

Ribbing Section

Work in ribbing for the first 3 inches:

  • Row 1 (RS): *k2, p2; repeat from * across.
  • Row 2 (WS): *p2, k2; repeat from * across.

Continue these 2 rows until you have completed 6 rows (1.5 inches).

Main Body of Hat

Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every row) for the next 5 inches:

  • Row 1: k across.
  • Row 2: k across.
  • Repeat until the hat measures 5 inches from the ribbing.

Crown Shaping

Begin crown shaping:

  • Row 1: *k8, k2tog; repeat from * across. (36 stitches)
  • Row 2: k across.
  • Row 3: *k7, k2tog; repeat from * across. (32 stitches)
  • Row 4: k across.
  • Row 5: *k6, k2tog; repeat from * across. (28 stitches)
  • Row 6: k across.
  • Row 7: *k5, k2tog; repeat from * across. (24 stitches)
  • Row 8: k across.
  • Row 9: *k4, k2tog; repeat from * across. (20 stitches)
  • Row 10: k across.
  • Row 11: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * across. (16 stitches)
  • Row 12: k across.
  • Row 13: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * across. (12 stitches)
  • Row 14: k across.
  • Row 15: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * across. (8 stitches)
  • Row 16: k across.
  • Row 17: k2tog across. (4 stitches)

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Secure the yarn and weave in ends.

Making the Pom-Pom

Using your pom-pom maker or cardboard, create a pom-pom. Make it about 3-4 inches in diameter, and securely tie it in the center. Trim any uneven ends to create a fluffy shape.

Attach the Pom-Pom

Sew the pom-pom onto the top of the hat using the yarn needle.

Finishing Touches

Weave in any loose ends with the yarn needle. Your cozy blue pom-pom beanie is now complete and ready to wear or gift!
