Pastel Elephant Tusks Baby Boots – Free Knit Pattern for Toddlers

Introduction

If you have never held a pair of knitting needles before, these dreamy plum-and-mauve elephant booties are the perfect first project to fall in love with. They are knit top-down with a simple raglan yoke, which means the shaping is built right into the pattern and you never have to guess where to add stitches. The finished boots are soft, squishy, and gently rounded, with a ribbed cuff that hugs little ankles and two cream knitted tusks plus one mauve ear on each side that turn a plain bootie into a sweet little elephant. Made in DK merino, they feel cloud-soft against a toddler's skin and look adorable with tiny jeans or a sleepsuit. Every single row is written out for you below, so even a complete beginner can make a pair this weekend.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: DK weight merino wool, approximately 100g total — 50g plum (Color A, the main boot), 30g mauve (Color B, the cuff, raglan contrast and ears), and 20g cream (Color C, the tusks).
  • Main needles: 3.75mm (US 5) circular needle, 40cm long, and a set of four 3.75mm (US 5) double-pointed needles (DPNs).
  • Ribbing needles: 3.5mm (US 4) needles (straight or circular) for the cuff.
  • Stitch markers: at least 4, to mark the raglan increase points.
  • Stitch holders: 2 (or spare yarn) to hold the sleeve stitches.
  • Tapestry needle: a blunt, large-eyed needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
  • Scissors: for cutting yarn.
  • Finished size: Toddler — fits a foot length of approximately 12–13 cm (4.75–5 in). Each boot measures about 13 cm long and 6 cm wide across the foot.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

  • k – knit: insert the right needle into the front of the stitch from left to right, wrap the yarn around, and pull the loop through.
  • p – purl: insert the right needle into the front of the stitch from right to left, wrap the yarn around the front, and pull the loop through to the back.
  • st(s) – stitch(es): one loop on your needle.
  • k2tog – knit two together: insert the needle through two stitches at once and knit them as one. This decreases your stitch count by one.
  • p2tog – purl two together: purl two stitches as one. This also decreases by one.
  • m1L – make one left: lift the horizontal bar between two stitches with your left needle from front to back, then knit into the back of it. This adds one stitch and leans left.
  • m1R – make one right: lift the horizontal bar between two stitches from back to front, then knit into the front of it. This adds one stitch and leans right.
  • yo – yarn over: wrap the yarn over the right needle to create an extra stitch (not used in this pattern, but listed for reference).
  • RS – right side: the front, public side of your work.
  • WS – wrong side: the back, inside of your work.
  • pm – place marker: slide a stitch marker onto your needle to mark a spot.
  • sm – slip marker: move the marker from the left needle to the right needle without knitting it.
  • rep – repeat: do the instruction again.
  • * to * – repeat the instructions between the asterisks.

Gauge

22 stitches and 30 rows = 10cm (4in) in stockinette stitch on 3.75mm needles.

Gauge matters because it is the only way to guarantee your booties come out the right size. If your stitches are too big, the boots will be baggy; too small, and they won't fit a toddler's foot. To check your gauge, cast on about 30 stitches, knit in stockinette (knit one row, purl one row) for about 12cm, then lay the swatch flat and count how many stitches fit across 10cm and how many rows fit in 10cm. If you have more stitches than 22, go up a needle size; if you have fewer, go down. Wash and block your swatch first, because merino can relax after washing.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Use stitch markers religiously. Place a marker at every raglan point and slip it on every row. It is the easiest way to never lose your place.
  • Don't pull your yarn tight. Keep an even, relaxed tension. Tight stitches make it hard to insert your needle and make the booties stiff.
  • Count your stitches at the end of every increase row. The pattern tells you the exact count in parentheses — check it before moving on.
  • Knit both booties at the same time if you can. Alternating rows on two sets of needles keeps them identical and avoids "second sock syndrome."
  • Weave in ends as you go. Small projects get messy fast; tuck each tail in as soon as you finish a section.
  • Block your appliqués before sewing. A light steam block curls the tusks into a gentle curve and makes the ears lie flat.

Assembly and Finishing

1. Sew the sole seam. Fold the boot so the two cast-on edges at the divide meet. Thread your tapestry needle with a matching tail and use mattress stitch: bring the needle under the horizontal bar between the first two stitches on one edge, then under the matching bar on the other edge, and pull gently. Work from the toe to the heel, keeping the seam flat and invisible.

2. Sew the back seam of the cuff. With RS facing, align the two short cuff edges and whip stitch them together, matching the rib pattern so the seam disappears.

3. Attach the tusks. Place two tusk appliqués at the toe of each boot, pointing forward and slightly outward. Using small whip stitches along the base of each tusk, sew them securely to the boot, catching only the surface so the stitches don't show on the inside.

4. Attach the ears. Sew one mauve ear to the outer side of each boot, positioned just above the tusk base, using the same small whip stitches around the lower edge.

5. Weave in all ends. Thread each tail onto the tapestry needle and run it through the back of several stitches, then trim close to the work.

6. Block. Spritz the booties lightly with water, gently shape them with your hands, and leave them to dry flat away from direct heat. This relaxes the merino and gives the tusks their soft curve.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the colors. Swap plum and mauve for any pastel pair — mint and sage, butter and cream, or blush and ivory — to make a whole elephant family.
  • Adjust the size. For a smaller newborn boot, use 3.25mm needles and work two fewer increase repeats in the yoke; for a larger toddler boot, go up to 4mm needles and add one extra increase repeat.
  • Substitute the yarn. Any DK-weight yarn works, but choose a soft, machine-washable blend for baby wear. Avoid scratchy acrylics against delicate skin.
  • Add a little extra charm. Embroider a tiny French-knot eye above each tusk, or knit the ears in cream for a two-tone elephant look.
