Chic Crocheted Oversized Cardigan Pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: Medium-weight yarn (approximately 800 yards in gradient shades of purple)
  • Hook: Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

In double crochet, 4” x 4” = 14 stitches and 8 rows.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sk = skip
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Instructions

Body of the Cardigan

  1. Start by chaining 80 (or adjust to fit your desired width).
  2. Row 1: In the 4th chain from the hook, make 1 dc. Continue making 1 dc in each ch across. Turn. (Total: 78 dc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next st, *ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next st*, repeat across. End with a dc in the last two stitches. Turn.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures approximately 30 inches in length (or desired length).

Sleeves

  1. Once the body is complete, fold the piece in half. Mark the shoulder seams with stitch markers.
  2. For each sleeve, count 15 stitches from the shoulder seam and mark. This will be the starting point for each sleeve.
  3. Attach yarn at the marked stitch for the first sleeve and chain 1.
  4. Row 1: dc in the same stitch, then dc in each stitch around until you reach the marker again. Turn.
  5. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next st, *ch 1, sk 1, dc in the next st*, repeat around. End with a dc in the last two stitches. Turn.
  6. Repeat Row 2 until the sleeve measures 20 inches (or desired length).
  7. Fasten off and repeat for the second sleeve.

Finishing Touches

  1. With the body facing you, attach yarn at the bottom edge and make a scalloped border: *5 dc in the same st, sk 1*; repeat this pattern along the bottom edge of the cardigan.
  2. Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.
  3. Block your cardigan to ensure it has a nice shape and drape.

Optional Styling

You can enhance the cardigan with buttons or a sash for more style. Wear it over a tank top, crop top, or any outfit of your choice!
