Spiral Crochet Placemat Pattern
This beautiful spiral placemat is made using various colors of worsted weight yarn. The spiral design gives it a unique flair, making it a delightful addition to any table setting.
Materials Needed
- Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors (approx. 200-300 yards total)
- Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
To ensure your placemat is the correct size, aim for 4 stitches and 5 rows = 1 inch in double crochet.
Abbreviations
- ch - chain
- dc - double crochet
- sl st - slip stitch
- st(s) - stitch(es)
Pattern Instructions
- Start with a magic ring: Create a magic ring and ch 3 (this counts as your first dc).
- First Round: Work 11 dc into the magic ring. Pull the tail to close the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (12 dc total)
- Second Round: Ch 3, dc in the same stitch, then 2 dc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (24 dc total)
- Third Round: Ch 3, *dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (36 dc total)
- Fourth Round: Ch 3, *dc in the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (48 dc total)
- Continuing the Spiral: Continue this pattern, increasing by 12 dc each round (dc in n stitches then 2 dc in the next), until your placemat reaches the desired diameter, approximately 15-18 inches.
- Change Colors: To change colors, simply finish the last dc of the round with the new color instead of the old color. Drop the old color and carry it along the placemat until you need it again.
- Finishing: Once you have reached the desired size, cut the yarn leaving a long tail, pull through the last stitch to secure. Weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
Enjoy your new Spiral Crochet Placemat! It’s not only functional but a fun way to bring color into your home.
