Crochet Textured Balloon Stitched Throw Blanket

Materials Needed:

  • Chunky yarn (approx. 800 yards)
  • Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Measuring tape

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • blo: back loop only

Pattern Notes:

This blanket is made up of balloon stitches that create a plush, textured finish. Each balloon stitch consists of a cluster of double crochets that are pulled together to form a puff effect. The blanket can be customized to any size by adjusting the starting chain.

Instructions:

Foundation Row:

Ch 120 to begin.

Row 1:

In the second ch from the hook, sc, then *ch 3, skip the next 3 ch, dc in the next ch (this forms a balloon), ch 1, skip the next ch, sc in the next ch; repeat from * across, ending with a sc in the last ch. Turn.

Row 2:

Ch 2 (this counts as your first dc), *dc in the blo of the sc from the previous row, ch 1, (dc in the blo of the next balloon stitch, ch 1); repeat from * across, making sure to end with a dc in the last sc. Turn.

Row 3:

Ch 1, sc in the first dc, *ch 3, skip the next ch, dc in the next dc, ch 1, skip the next ch, sc in the next dc; repeat from * across, ending with a sc in the last dc. Turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the blanket measures your desired length, approximately 50 inches for a throw.

Final Row:

Finish with a row of sc around the entire blanket to give it a clean edge. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Finishing:

Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose yarn ends. Block your blanket to enhance texture as desired.
