Cozy Red Hat, Scarf, and Mitts Set

This beginner-friendly pattern features a lovely matching set of a hat, scarf, and fingerless mitts, all worked in a delightful red yarn. Perfect for keeping warm, each piece is made with simple stitches, making it ideal for those just starting on their knitting journey.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in red (approximately 400 yards total)
  • US Size 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles
  • US Size 8 (5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Gauge

20 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations

  • K = knit
  • P = purl
  • CO = cast on
  • BO = bind off
  • sts = stitches
  • rnd = round

Instructions

Hat

  1. CO 80 sts using circular needles.
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  3. Work in ribbing (K1, P1) for 2 inches.
  4. Next round: K all stitches for 6 inches.
  5. Begin decreasing: K12, K2tog around (70 sts). Repeat this decrease every other round until 10 sts remain.
  6. Thread the remaining stitches through a tapestry needle, pull tight, and secure.

Scarf

  1. CO 30 sts using circular needles.
  2. Work in (K2, P2) ribbing for the entire length.
  3. Continue until the scarf measures approximately 60 inches long.
  4. BO all stitches loosely.

Mitts (Make 2)

  1. CO 40 sts using double-pointed needles.
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  3. Work (K2, P2) ribbing for 4 inches for the cuff.
  4. Add thumbhole: K20, place next 10 sts on a stitch holder (this will be the thumb later), K to end.
  5. Continue working in the round until the mitts measure 7 inches from cuff.
  6. Begin decreasing: K2, K2tog around. Repeat this decrease until 10 sts remain.
  7. For thumb, pick up the 10 sts left on the holder, K around for 2 inches and BO.
  8. Weave in all ends securely.
