Introduction

Welcome to the whimsical world of amigurumi! In this blog post, we will guide you through creating your very own charming crochet axolotl. This delightful aquatic creature is not only a fun project for crochet enthusiasts but also makes a perfect handmade gift or a cute addition to your collection. With just a few materials and some basic crochet skills, you’ll be able to bring this adorable axolotl to life!

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Medium weight (Worsted) yarn in pink and white
  • Hook: 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stuffing: Fiberfill or any stuffing material of your choice
  • Safety Eyes: Black safety eyes (or you can sew them on later)
  • Felt: Small white felt circles for cheeks (optional)
  • Scissors: For cutting yarn
  • Tapestry Needle: For sewing pieces together and weaving in ends

Step-by-Step Instructions

Head and Body

  1. Start with a magic ring using the pink yarn.
  2. Round 1: Work 6 single crochet (sc) into the magic ring. (6 sts)
  3. Round 2: Increase in each stitch around (inc). You should have 12 stitches now. (12 sts)
  4. Round 3: (1 sc, inc) around. You will have 18 stitches. (18 sts)
  5. Round 4: (2 sc, inc) around. You will have 24 stitches. (24 sts)
  6. Continue increasing in this manner until you reach a total of 36 stitches.
  7. Once you reach 36 stitches, work even (no increases or decreases) for the next 10 rounds. This will form the body of the axolotl.
  8. Begin decreasing: (4 sc, dec) around until you have 6 stitches remaining.
  9. Stuff the head and body firmly with fiberfill to give it shape.
  10. Fasten off the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing later.

Legs (Make 4)

  1. Start with a magic ring using the pink yarn.
  2. Round 1: Work 6 single crochet (sc) into the magic ring. (6 sts)
  3. Round 2: Increase in each stitch around (inc). You should have 12 stitches now. (12 sts)
  4. Work even for 5 rounds. This will create the legs.
  5. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Repeat this process to make a total of 4 legs.

Gills (Make 6)

  1. Chain 6 with the pink yarn.
  2. In the second chain from the hook, work 1 single crochet (sc) and continue to sc across the chain.
  3. Fasten off and leave a long tail for attaching. Repeat this process to create a total of 6 gills.

Eyes

  1. Sew or glue the black safety eyes onto the head of the axolotl.
  2. For added cuteness, you can sew or glue two small white felt circles as cheeks on either side of the face.

Finishing Touches

Once all parts are completed, sew the legs onto the body securely. Attach the gills to the sides of the head. Make sure everything is well secured and that your axolotl is looking adorable!

Congratulations! You have successfully created your very own crochet axolotl amigurumi. Enjoy your new handmade friend and share your creation with others. Happy crocheting!
