BACK PANEL

  1. With smaller needles (US 4), CO 48 (52, 56) sts for your size.
  2. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1.5 inches. This creates a neat, stretchy bottom edge.
  3. Switch to larger needles (US 6) and begin the Honeycomb Stitch pattern (Rows 1-4).
  4. Work even (no increases or decreases) until piece measures 6 (7, 8) inches from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.
  5. Shape Armholes: BO 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. You will now have 42 (46, 50) sts.
  6. Continue in pattern until armhole measures 4 (4.5, 5) inches from the bind-off edge.
  7. Shape Neck: On the next RS row, work across the first 14 (16, 18) sts, then BO the center 14 sts, then work to the end. You will now work each shoulder separately.
  8. On the next row (WS), work across the first shoulder. On the following RS row, BO 2 sts at the neck edge. You will have 12 (14, 16) sts per shoulder.
  9. Work even until armhole measures 5 (5.5, 6) inches. BO all sts for that shoulder. Repeat for the other shoulder.

FRONT PANEL

  1. Work exactly as for the back panel until the armhole measures 2 (2.5, 3) inches from the bind-off.
  2. Shape Neck: On the next RS row, work across the first 16 (18, 20) sts, then BO the center 10 sts, then work to the end. Work each shoulder separately.
  3. At the neck edge, BO 2 sts twice, then BO 1 st once. You will have 12 (14, 16) sts per shoulder.
  4. Work even until armhole matches the back panel. BO all sts.

SLEEVES (make 2)

  1. With smaller needles, CO 28 (30, 32) sts.
  2. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 inch.
  3. Switch to larger needles and the Honeycomb Stitch pattern.
  4. Increase Row (RS): K1, M1, work in pattern to last st, M1, K1. Repeat this increase every 4th row 4 (5, 6) times total. You will have 36 (40, 44) sts.
  5. Work even until sleeve measures 5 (6, 7) inches from cast-on edge.
  6. BO all sts loosely.

FINISHING

  1. Seams: Sew the shoulder seams together using a tapestry needle and matching yarn.
  2. Sleeves: Set in the sleeves by matching the center of the sleeve to the shoulder seam. Sew the sleeve caps into the armholes. Then, sew the side seams and the sleeve seams.
  3. Neckband: With smaller needles, pick up and knit approximately 40 (44, 48) sts around the neckline. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 0.5 inch. BO loosely in pattern.
  4. Leg Openings (optional for romper style): Sew the crotch seam from the bottom edge up 2 inches. Then, with smaller needles, pick up and knit sts around each leg opening. Work 3 rows of K1, P1 ribbing. BO loosely.
  5. Button Band (if desired for front closure): Pick up sts along the left front edge. Work 4 rows of K1, P1 ribbing, making buttonholes on row 3 (K2tog, yo) spaced evenly. Repeat for the right front edge without buttonholes. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
  6. Weave in Ends: Weave in all loose ends carefully.
  7. Blocking: Gently block the romper to open up the honeycomb texture. Lay flat to dry.
