Crochet Adorable Elephant Earflap Hat Free Pattern

Materials

  • Extra soft worsted weight yarn in Gray
  • G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook
  • 2 small black buttons for eyes
  • Fabric scissors
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

3 dc stitches x 2 rows = 1 inch

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase (2 sc in same st)

Hat

  1. Start with a magic ring, ch 1, make 8 sc into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to first sc. (8 sc)
  2. Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (16 sc)
  3. Round 3: *Sc in next st, inc in next st* around. (24 sc)
  4. Round 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st* around. (32 sc)
  5. Round 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st* around. (40 sc)
  6. Continue in this pattern until you reach the desired circumference.
  7. Continue to crochet in rounds without increasing until the hat reaches the desired length.

Ears (Make 2)

  1. Round 1: In Gray, start with a magic ring, ch 1, make 6 sc in ring. (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sc)
  3. Round 3: *Sc in next st, inc in next st* around. (18 sc)
  4. Round 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st* around. (24 sc)
  5. Round 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st* around. (30 sc)
  6. Round 6: Sc around, then fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

Trunk

  1. Round 1: Create a magic ring, ch 1, make 6 sc in the ring. (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: Sc around. (6 sc)
  3. Round 3: Inc in each st around. (12 sc)
  4. Round 4-8: Sc around, continue until the trunk measures desired length.
  5. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

  1. Sew the ears to the sides of the hat.
  2. Sew the trunk onto the front center of the hat.
  3. Attach the black buttons for eyes just above the trunk.

Earflaps

  1. With Gray yarn, attach yarn to one side of the hat where the earflaps will be.
  2. Row 1: Sc 10 stitches down the side for the earflap, ch 1, turn.
  3. Row 2-6: Sc across, ch 1, turn each row.
  4. Fasten off and repeat on the opposite side.

Ties

  1. Cut three strands of yarn for each tie, each about 12 inches long.
  2. Fold strands in half, attach to end of each earflap, braid, and knot securely.
