Cozy Red Knit Beanie Pattern

This cozy red beanie is perfect for beginners wanting to learn the basics of knitting while creating a stylish accessory. With simple stitches and a straightforward pattern, you'll enjoy making this hat in no time!

Materials

  • 1 skein of worsted weight yarn in red (approximately 200 yards)
  • Pair of size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. It's important to check your gauge to ensure a proper fit!

Abbreviations

  • K = knit
  • P = purl
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • CO = cast on
  • BO = bind off
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side

Instructions

  1. Cast on 72 stitches using the long-tail method. Make sure to leave a long enough tail for weaving in later.
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.
  3. Work in a ribbing pattern of K2, P2 for 2 inches. This will create a stretchy brim for your hat.
  4. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every round) and continue until the piece measures about 7 inches from the cast-on edge.
  5. Begin decreasing for the crown:
    • Round 1: K6, K2tog around (63 stitches)
    • Round 2: Knit all stitches
    • Round 3: K5, K2tog around (54 stitches)
    • Round 4: Knit all stitches
    • Round 5: K4, K2tog around (45 stitches)
    • Round 6: Knit all stitches
    • Round 7: K3, K2tog around (36 stitches)
    • Round 8: Knit all stitches
    • Round 9: K2, K2tog around (27 stitches)
    • Round 10: Knit all stitches
    • Round 11: K1, K2tog around (18 stitches)
    • Round 12: K2tog around (9 stitches)
  6. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 8 inches. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
  7. Weave in all loose ends using the yarn needle.
  8. Your cozy red beanie is now finished! Enjoy wearing it or gifting it to someone special.

Happy knitting!
