Colorful Striped Crocheted Toy

This project is a fun and colorful crocheted toy designed for beginners. It features a series of horizontal stripes in bright colors, creating a soft and cuddly item that is perfect for kids!

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in the following colors:
    • Blue
    • Green
    • Red
    • Yellow
  • Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Stuffing for the toy (polyester fiberfill)

Gauge

Approximately 4 inches x 4 inches = 10 stitches and 10 rows in single crochet. Gauge is not critical for this project.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • inc = increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec = decrease (single crochet 2 stitches together)

Instructions

Base of the Toy

  1. Start with the blue yarn. Make a magic ring.
  2. Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in the ring. (6 stitches)
  3. Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
  4. Round 3: *Sc in the next stitch, inc in the next stitch* repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  5. Round 4: *Sc in the next 2 stitches, inc in the next stitch* repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches)
  6. Round 5-10: Sc in each stitch around (24 stitches). Repeat this step for a total of 6 rounds. You will have a nice cylindrical shape.
  7. Now it’s time to start changing colors! For Round 11, switch to green yarn.
  8. Round 11: Sc in each stitch around using green yarn. (24 stitches)
  9. Round 12: Change to red yarn. Sc in each stitch around. (24 stitches)
  10. Round 13: Change to yellow yarn. Sc in each stitch around. (24 stitches)
  11. Round 14: Change to green yarn. Sc in each stitch around. (24 stitches)
  12. Round 15: Change to blue yarn. Sc in each stitch around. (24 stitches)

Shaping the Toy

  1. Round 16: *Sc in the next 3 stitches, dec* repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches)
  2. Round 17: *Sc in the next 2 stitches, dec* repeat from * to * around. (12 stitches)
  3. Round 18: *Sc in the next stitch, dec* repeat from * to * around. (6 stitches)

Finishing Up

  1. Start stuffing the toy with the polyester fiberfill as you close it up.
  2. Once you’ve finished stuffing, use a tapestry needle to weave the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the opening.
  3. Weave in all ends securely.

Optional: Embellishments

You can sew on buttons for eyes or any other embellishments to make it unique!
