Colorful Granny Square Bag Pattern

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in orange, green, blue, yellow, and red.
  • Crochet hook size H/5mm.
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors.
  • Fabric for lining (optional).

Gauge

Each granny square measures approximately 4 inches by 4 inches.

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • rnd: round

Instructions

Granny Square

Part 1: Center (Orange)
  1. Start with a magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first dc), make 2 dc into the ring, *ch 2, 3 dc into the ring* repeat from * to * two more times. Ch 2, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join. (You should have 4 sets of 3 dc)
Part 2: First Layer (Green)
  1. Join green yarn in any ch-2 space, ch 3, 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space (creates a corner). *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into the next ch-2 space* repeat around. Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join.
Part 3: Second Layer (Blue)
  1. Join blue yarn in any ch-2 corner space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space, *3 dc in the next space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner space* repeat around. Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join.
Part 4: Third Layer (Yellow)
  1. Join yellow yarn in any ch-2 corner space, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same space, *3 dc in each space across, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner space* repeat around. Sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join.
Part 5: Border (Red)
  1. Join red yarn to any ch-2 corner space, ch 1, sc in the same space, sc in each dc and 2 sc in each ch-2 space around. Sl st to the first sc to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly

  1. Make the necessary amount of granny squares following the pattern above. The number of squares will depend on your desired bag size.
  2. Sew the squares together, forming a bag shape. Typically, a 3x3 or 4x4 arrangement works well.
  3. Crochet or sew handles onto the top edges of the bag.
  4. If desired, sew a fabric lining inside the bag for added structure and durability.

Finishing

Once assembled, block your bag to shape it properly by dampening it slightly and laying it flat to dry.
