Sizes & Measurements

Important Notes

  • This cardigan is worked flat in two pieces (back and two fronts) from the bottom up, then seamed.
  • The mosaic pattern is created using slipped stitches. Always slip stitches purlwise with the yarn held to the wrong side (WS) of the work.

Back

  1. Ribbing: With smaller needles (US 7) and Color A, cast on 90 (104, 118) stitches. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 2 inches.
  2. Setup: Switch to larger needles (US 8). Work 2 rows in stockinette stitch (Row 1: knit, Row 2: purl).
  3. Begin Mosaic Pattern: Work the following 8-row pattern. Repeat these 8 rows, alternating colors in this sequence: A, B, A, C, A, D, A, B, etc. (Each color band is 2 rows of slipped stitches.)
    • Row 1 (RS): With Color A, knit across.
    • Row 2 (WS): With Color A, purl across.

Left Front

  1. Ribbing: With smaller needles and Color A, cast on 45 (52, 59) stitches. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 2 inches.
  2. Setup: Switch to larger needles. Work 2 rows in stockinette stitch.
  3. Begin Mosaic Pattern: Work the same 8-row mosaic pattern as for the back, but only work the first 45 (52, 59) stitches of the pattern (the pattern is symmetrical).
  4. Continue: Work even until piece measures 16 (18, 20) inches from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.
  5. Shape Neck: At the beginning of the next RS row, bind off 5 (6, 7) stitches. Then decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge every RS row 4 times. Work even until piece matches back length to shoulder.
  6. Shape Shoulders: Bind off 8 (9, 10) stitches at the beginning of the next 3 RS rows.

Right Front

  1. Work as for left front, reversing all shaping. Bind off for neck at the beginning of WS rows. Shape shoulders at the beginning of WS rows.

Sleeves (Make 2)

  1. Ribbing: With smaller needles and Color A, cast on 40 (44, 48) stitches. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 2 inches.
  2. Setup: Switch to larger needles. Work in stockinette stitch.
  3. Increase: Increase 1 stitch each side every 6 rows until you have 60 (66, 72) stitches.
