Sweater

  3. Switch to stockinette stitch (knit every row) and knit until the piece measures 12 inches from the cast-on edge.
  4. To shape the armholes, bind off the first 4 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows (each side).
  5. Continue knitting until the piece measures 16 inches from the cast-on edge, then shape the neckline by binding off the middle 12 stitches.
  6. Continue knitting each side until armholes measure 7 inches from the previous bind off.
  7. Now finish the sleeves: CO 30 stitches on size 7 needles and knit in ribbing (k2, p2) for 4 inches. Bind off.
  8. Attach the sleeves to the sweater, sewing in place using the yarn needle.
  9. Finish the front with buttons: sew 4 buttons evenly spaced down the center.

Hat

  2. Knit in ribbing (k2, p2) for 4 inches.

  4. Begin decreases: k2tog across the whole row. You should have 24 stitches left.
  5. Knit the next row plain, then repeat the k2tog decrease every other row until 6 stitches remain.
  6. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and thread it through the remaining stitches using a yarn needle. Pull tight and secure.
